World's largest tidal power turbine unveiled

A tidal power turbine said to be the largest in the world has been unveiled.

The Atlantis Resources Corporation has dubbed its creation the AK1000 and it will be located at the European Marine Energy Centre in the far north of Scotland.

According to the New York Times, the renewable energy produced from the tidal power turbine will be used at a computer data centre.

"It is about the emergence of tidal power as a viable asset class that will require the development of local supply chains employing local people to deliver sustainable energy to the local grid," commented Timothy Cornelius, chief executive of Atlantis.

He stated that the tidal power turbine takes the sector one step close to producing renewable energy on a commercial scale for the first time.

Scotland's first minister Alex Salmond stated recently that Scotland can become a world leader in the renewable energy sector if it capitalises on the resources it has available.
