Solar power is 'fantastic' renewable energy source

The sun been lauded as an excellent source of renewable energy by a national newspaper.

Solar power was discussed by the Independent as it examined the next generation of fuel and the publication claimed it is "fantastic".

While noting that there are drawbacks, such as nighttime and cloud cover limiting the amount of energy that can be generated from the sun, it suggested that these could be negated in the future by setting up solar collectors in space.

Scientists in Japan are reportedly already planning to put this technology into orbit, ensuring uninterrupted access to sunlight.

However, it could be several decades before such collectors are being used regularly, with the first prototype not scheduled to launch until 2030.

It is not the first time engineers have looked to space for solutions to solar power limitations.

In a report to the American Chemical Society last week, Boston University's Malay Mazumder indicated that self-cleaning technology developed for missions to Mars could help to keep solar panels free from dust.
