Solar energy 'is gaining popularity'

More and more renewable energy is being created through solar power panels, it has been stated.

According to SolarElectricityBasics.net, solar energy collectors were first devised in order to provide power to satellites which orbit the Earth.

But it pointed out the technology has been developed and can now be used in a variety of items, from vehicles to mobile phones.

"One of the advantages of solar electricity is that it is fully automatic and is very suitable for unmanned operation," noted the site.

It added that solar energy can be a particularly useful source of renewable energy for those who live in remote locations and struggle to get access to other types of power.

This comes shortly after the Prince of Wales was given a demonstration of how solar energy is generated by Professor David Lidzey of Sheffield University's department of physics and astronomy at a Royal Garden Party in London.

Professor Lidzey said it was "wonderful" Prince Charles had shown so much interest in renewable energy
