Scotland 'has massive renewable energy potential'

Friends of the Earth has described the renewable energy prospects in Scotland as "massive".

According to the organisation's chief executive in Scotland Duncan McLaren, 25 per cent of all of Europe's potential wind energy is in Scotland.

He explained that this makes the country a natural location to open up new businesses in the green industry and create new jobs as a result.

But Mr McLaren called on the government to offer more help to firms that want to open up in Scotland because of its renewable energy potential.

Green jobs can also be created by focusing on energy saving, as this could open up new opportunities for skilled labourers.

He said: "Still more can be created with more support for waste reduction and recycling, and for public transport."

Mr McLaren's comments come after Scotland's first minister Alex Salmond claimed that by investing in renewable energy developments, as many as 60,000 green jobs could be created in Scotland over the next decade.
