Renewable energy 'is very important'

Renewable energy has been described as very important by a representative of an industry website.

Neil McNiven from Renewable Energy UK pointed out that it is crucial to reduce the amount of power used.

He said renewable energy is "increasing the cost of energy since it is currently only competitive with fossil fuels because of large subsidies".

The expert predicted that feed-in tariffs will soon be shut down as they are an expensive way for renewable energy to be promoted.

"There will be increased use of solar water heating, which can be price-competitive with fossil fuels," he added.

Mr McNiven also stated that "massive growth" of solar energy production is on the way in southern Europe, a region which traditionally receives lots of sunshine for much of the year.

He was commenting after the German Association of the Energy and Water Industries revealed that renewable energy developments in the country have pushed the price of power up.
