Renewable energy 'is a necessity'

European governments do not have a choice to develop renewable energy production as it is a necessity, according to one MEP.

Jean Lambert of the Green Party stated that many countries all over the continent still believe they have a choice whether or not to make strides forward in the renewable energy field.

She claimed some of these nations are "blindly wedded" to fossil fuels and do not see they need to make the move to renewable energy in order to meet carbon emissions reduction targets from the European Union.

"The only real green solution to climate change is renewable energy," she said.

Ms Lambert added that the UK has excellent renewable energy resources and could meet its electricity needs through the generation of wind power in offshore wind farms alone.

Her comments come soon after Elisabeth Schroedter of the Greens/European Free Alliance was successful with her motion in the European parliament for the continent to have a renewable energy and green jobs plan in place by 2011.
