Ofgem opens wind energy developments tender

Offshore wind energy developments are up for grabs after Ofgem revealed it is opening up the £1.9 billion tender to create facilities around the UK.

It is thought that 2.8 GW of wind energy will be created at the offshore wind farms once the projects get underway.

Firms can apply for the work now but are not likely to find out whether or not they have been successful until summer 2011.

Charles Hendry, energy minister, stated that the wind energy resources Britain has means that it should be doing more to produce clean power.

"I hope the second round of tendering for owning and operating the links to offshore wind farms will be as successful as the first, where investment interest was four times the necessary level," he said.

Earlier this year, the Thanet wind farm opened off the coast of Kent, becoming the largest such facility in the world and producing enough renewable energy to power tens of thousands of local homes.
