Huge offshore wind farm set to open

UK energy is to be boosted this month with the opening of the largest offshore wind farm in the world.

The facility at Thanet features 100 turbines and is currently in the last stages of testing, with Swedish power company Vattenfall checking the site is ready to become operational.

UK energy and climate change minister Chris Huhne will officially open the offshore wind farm later this month, reports the Guardian.

It is thought that the amount of renewable energy produced by the facility will be enough to power around 200,000 homes in the Kent region.

"But industry experts claim that the wider green revolution needed to meet EU renewable and climate change targets imposed by the European Union is still in danger from proposed spending cuts," commented the Guardian.

This comes shortly after Alstom revealed that it is to extend the Whitelee wind farm by adding 75 wind turbines and 217 MW of wind energy to the Scottish site.
