Germany 'creates more solar power despite less sun'

More renewable energy is produced in Germany via solar power than in sunnier European countries such as Spain and Italy, an expert has stated.

Tobi Kellner, information officer at the Centre for Alternative Technology, stated that renewable energy has taken off in the country due to the feed-in tariffs introduced by the government.

He explained that the fact Germany produces more renewable energy from wind power than the UK demonstrates the success of the move from German policymakers.

"For Germany, the large market share in the renewables sector meant a very significant role for German companies in the global renewables technology market," he said.

Some of the world's leading renewable energy companies are based in Germany, in both the solar power and wind energy fields, the Centre for Alternative Technology information officer added.

He was commenting after an article in European Voice recently suggested that decisions made by policymakers in Germany regarding the future of renewable energy can help to fuel technological developments.
