France aims to boost renewable energy production

France is looking into ways to boost the production of renewable energy by inviting proposals for new projects.

Junior ecology minister Chantal Jouanno stated that the offshore wind energy sector is one in which the country's government is particularly looking to expand.

She added that an announcement is imminent and will be made in the next few days, with three GW of power expected to be the target for the new renewable energy developments.

A spokesman at the ecology ministry told Reuters that the initial investment in renewable energy could be as much as ten billion euros (£8.6 billion).

"About ten locations have been identified in the English Channel, the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea. The first offshore wind farms should start operations in 2015," he said.

Ireland-based renewable energy firm International Energy Investments Group recently announced it is making a £12.9 million solar power investment in France by opening up two new plants.
