European energy 'supergrid' is possible

A European energy supergrid is a possibility as more and more countries on the continent join forces to push renewable energy developments forward.

Stewart Larque, UK media relations manager at National Grid, stated that it is almost certain more links will be established between the UK and the rest of Europe over the coming years.

He explained that France already works closely with the UK on renewable energy matters and discussions are currently being held with Statnett, the Norwegian national grid, to see if the two countries can join forces.

"There will certainly be a bigger network in the North Sea, but the extent to which everything is connected up between different countries, I think is difficult to say," he said.

Earlier this month, energy watchdog Ofgem stated that it believes an investment of £200 billion needs to be made over the next ten years to move renewable energy development forward as part of a push to create a low-carbon economy in the UK.
