Dong Energy has announced that it has successfully installed the first turbine at a major offshore wind energy project in the UK.

When work is complete, the Walney 1 Offshore Wind Farm will feature more than 50 wind turbines, with installation of the first of these completed after 18 hours of work.

"The main issue was to make sure the first turbine went up in a safe and secure manner and the crew felt confident with handling the equipment," stated the company.

It is expected that the other turbines will only take around ten hours each to install.

The wind farm is located off the coast of Barrow-in-Furness in Cumbria and when completed it will produce, in conjunction with its brother Walney 2 Offshore Wind Farm, 367.2MW of wind energy.

Dong Energy began construction work on the Walney 1 Offshore Wind Farm in February 2010, following consultations with residents of Barrow-in-Furness and Heysham.
