Wind energy development sites in the UK have been given out by the Crown Estate.

It has been announced that the Gunfleet Sands extension is to be handled by DONG Energy, while National Renewable Energy Centre Ltd will take control of the Blyth Offshore Wind Demonstration site.

Two Scottish wind energy development sites have also been handed out with exclusivity awards - Methil Offshore Wind Farm to 2-B Energy and European Offshore Wind Deployment Centre to Aberdeen Offshore Wind.

Rob Hastings, director of marine estate at The Crown Estate said: "Technical innovation is essential to cutting offshore wind costs. We are pleased that this is another positive step to help further grow the UK's capacity for secure offshore wind energy."

Earlier this week, Vestas announced that it has won a manufacturing contract in the wind energy sector.

It will produce 22 V90-3.0 MW wind turbines to be used at Devon Wind Power's Fullabrook Wind Farm.
