Continental grid 'required for European energy policy'

European energy policy requires the formation of a continent-wide grid to store the renewable energy produced.

This is one of the conclusions of a newly-published report by European Wind Energy Association, which stated that fair and effective competition also needs to be fostered.

Powering Europe launched earlier this week at the GRIDS 2010 conference and exhibition in Berlin and was immediately welcomed by Daniel Dobbeni, president of ENTSO-E.

He added that it ties in with current energy policy decisions which are being made by the European Commission.

"The report also provides arguments that will certainly be in the centre of policy debate as we can presently observe from the publication of the commission's blueprint for an integrated European energy network," he said.

It was recently revealed that €146 million (£126 million) of uncommitted funds will be diverted by the European parliament into renewable energy projects across the continent, with local infrastructure developments expected to be a priority.
