The amount of renewable energy produced by the UK is "embarrassing", the Renewable Energy Centre has stated.
It noted that this is because the country's government has hailed it as a world leader in wind energy production.
A spokeswoman for the centre explained that the UK is currently sitting towards the bottom of the leaderboard for renewable energy production across Europe.
"The UK has fallen far behind Europe and countries such as Germany, in the race to embrace renewable energy and sustainable ways of living," she said.
According to the spokeswoman, the UK is only now getting to grips with renewable energy and starting to catch up with its European counterparts.
Her comments came after Eurostat released figures for renewable energy production in Europe in 2008, which showed that the UK had one of the lowest shares on the continent.
The EU is aiming for 20 per cent of its energy to come from renewable energy sources by 2020.
